Drugoryadni lyudy

Complementing our April showcase, this performance film set in a villa with nouveau riche owners about a corpse in a suitcase and interspersed with vaudeville elements, by Kira Muratova, an Odessite by choice, shows that she is profoundly interested in people (especially those 'at the bottom'), but does not want to think beyond caricature and genre parody. K.M.: "They are weak, they suffer, they are sensitive. That's exactly what's sympathetic about them. Supposedly they are killers or bodyguards. But everything they do, they do wrong, these ridiculous, sensitive people. They can't even be really brutal." (bw)
